Garden Design trends for 2023

Though the season’s cold weather may suggest otherwise, Spring is right around the corner and a vital element of the change of the seasons involves getting outside and gardening. If you’re thinking about how you’re going to design your garden space this year and need some inspiration, take a look at the trends you’ll see in 2023 below.

Greek Style

Greek-style gardening is characterised by different levels and textures. Greek gardens tend to be adorned with statues, stone pathways, accent boulders, natural-looking outdoor landscape lighting, terracotta pots, jars, well-trimmed shrubs, and raised flowerbeds.

While creating a unique look for a variety of plant life, Greek gardens also emphasise the importance of patios and patio furniture. For example, wrought iron patio furniture is a popular choice for this type of garden, as it contrasts with the textures of the pots and garden beds.  Due to the Mediterranean lifestyle and warm climate, outdoor spaces are a place to gather with houseguests and family and are a big part of Greek garden functionality.

Sustainable Gardens

By their very nature, gardens are environmentally dependent so the fact that sustainable garden designs are trending for 2023 should come as no surprise. In an effort to be more eco-friendly, people who keep a beautiful outdoor space are opting for more water-wise gardens this coming year. Frugal gardeners can also appreciate this trend as it encourages upcycling pots and containers, DIY composting and growing wildlife-safe greenery.

Slow Gardening

Slow gardening is another design choice that’s gaining traction because it embraces the joy of gardening as a hobby rather than focusing too hard on the perfect aesthetic. Slow gardening suggests taking a laid back approach and working on your garden design at your own pace. This gardening method allows homeowners to make adjustments as the seasons change and encourages having fun with nature.

Vertical Gardens

Having very small or limited backyard space used to push otherwise green-fingered people away from gardening. Fortunately, an interesting trend for 2023 works at making the most of small spaces.

Vertical gardening is not new, but it is likely to be trending again soon. This gardening design trend suggests building up instead of out by stacking flowers, herbs, and vegetables in vertical planters and allowing them to climb your garden walls.

Garden Glow-ups

Finally, homeowners with existing gardens are working on garden improvements rather than a complete remodel of the space. Adding lighting and decor elements to a garden space, replacing old outdoor furniture, putting a new finish on worn patios, and trimming overgrown plants are a couple of simple garden glow-ups to perform.

The appeal of garden glow-ups is that they can be as simple or as complex as you like. The goal is to make improvements that fit your style.
